PROF. DR. ROFINA YASMIN OTHMAN

Brief Profile

In 1990 on completion of an MSc at the University of Malaya, Dr.Yasmin was awarded a Chevening scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in Plant virology at the John Innes Institute of Plant Science. She then served as lecturer at the Department of Genetics and Cellular Biology and was appointed Associate Professor at the Institute of Biological Sciences in 1999 and Professor in 2005. She has been awarded fellowships and international exchange links grants which gave her opportunities to work at Cornell University, Scripps Research Institute, Nara Institute of Science and Technology, University of Derby and the University of Leicester. Dr Yasmin has numerous International links and is a member of the International Banana Genomics consortium. She is an Associate Fellow of the IMBN, a member of UNIDOs South-south Biosafety network and the Asian Network for Biosafety Education. She has served on the National Genetic Modification Advisory Committee and has also represented Malaysia at the UNESCO Bioethics meeting. Dr. Yasmin was the founding head of the Centre for Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture (www.cebar.um.edu.my) and Chair of the University’s Biotechnology and Bioproduct Cluster (UMBIO).She is also chief editor of the Asia Pacific Journal for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and is on the editorial board of several other scientific journals. She is currently seconded to the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation Malaysia as Undersecretary of the National Biotechnology Division.She also sits on the Board of Governers of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and is Malaysia’s representative to the Asean Subcomittee on Biotechnology.

Transgenic plants for the production of novel biopharmaceuticals and for plant improvement. Novel Plant Virus epitope expression systems. Plant genomics for novel gene discovery. Molecular epidemiology of tropical plant viruses. Molecular Marker systems in plants and comparative plant genetics. Issues concerning Biotechnology Policies, bioethics and Biosafety.
